Meet Dr. Rene Amaya
Dr. Amaya was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He attended medical school at UT Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. He completed his pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center in Arizona. He stayed an additional year after completing residency to serve as Chief Resident. He returned to Texas to complete an additional 3 years of specialty training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine. He is board certified in both Pediatric Infectious Diseases and General Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. After completing this training he founded Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialists of Houston in 2002.
In 2011 he recognized a growing demand for complex wound care management in children. He obtained additional training in wound care and now runs the only pediatric wound care center in the Houston area. Dr. Amaya is designated as a Certified Wound Specialist Physician (CWSP) by the American Board of Wound Management and is one of the few pediatricians in the United States to receive this designation. His wound care work has been published in numerous medical journals and he is a speaker at wound care conferences and seminars throughout the United States and Europe. He is a member of the Academy of Physicians in Wound Healing, International Society for Pediatric Wound Care and The Association for the Advancement of Wound Care.
In 2015 Dr. Amaya added laser therapy to his practice to address the concerns by parents regarding the visual appearance of scars and healed wounds. Two state of the art laser devices chosen for their safety and efficacy are used to treat scars from traumatic injuries, surgery and burns. With these same advanced lasers Dr. Amaya and his staff have also received training to provide laser cosmetic services in adults. Rest assured the same care and attention he provides his pediatric patients will be extended to his adult cosmetic patients as well.
Dr. Amaya is married and has two children. He is fluent in English and Spanish.
